I want you to miss my point.

See, if I come to you, and I say: "Look!" while pointing with my index finger towards somewhere in the distance, yet you stare at my finger and tell me how pretty my nails look, you would be missing the "point", quite literally.

We point everyday, towards somewhere in the metaphorical distance, not with our fingers but with language. I am pointing out for you ideas embedded in this sentence. You point out your thoughts and feelings to your loved ones, yoru colleagues, and strangers.

We can merely hope that others are willing to look towards the direction we point towards. There is no guarantee they will. Even if they do, there is a good chance that when they walk towards the destination themselves, a few degrees of angle change will have made a difference of up to a few hundred miles.

Language can be imprecise as such. We negotiate meaning, by talking more and more. We invite others to join us along the way. We point with our fingers for each other. We look at the map and say: Maybe this is not quite right. Should we try another path? We go our separate ways. We end up somewhere so much different from where the fingers originally pointed towards.

Sometimes, we point at each other's fingers and stop walking. We start asking each other about manicure techniques. This blogging space feels like that. Words get put in pretty wrapping papers and shipped across everywhere. You look at one direction, point it out for me and I hopefully will follow you soon. Many more may follow. Someone gets there with you. Someone gets lost midway.

But it is never about the destination. If we all followed one finger towards one place, it would be really boring. Go on tangents. End up somewhere different. Appreciate each other's metaphorical nails and miss the point.
